Antique Doll's Room Boxes that I wish I had in my Collection

Below are pictures of Antique Room Boxes that I saw in museums last spring when I traveled through German, Austria, Poland the the Czech Republic.

I thought you might enjoy seeing all the details that are in the original rooms. From furniture to light fixtures to glassware and cutlery and the wallpaper and the curtains - not to mention all the wonderful dolls with their pets and playthings. 

The kitchens are quite wonderful and make me glad that we have modern conveniences.

Paris Flea Markets - Doll sightings

Three weeks ago I visited both of the large Paris Flea Markets in search of dolls and dollhouses. As you will see at the end of this post I didn't buy very much, but what I did buy was wonderful!

First I went south to the Marché aux puces - Porte de Vanves. It is an outdoor flea market that takes place on Saturdays and Sundays. It is a true flea market in my opinion. People bring used and vintage junk to sell. Although, as you will see from the pictures below, there are some treasures

The first dollhouse I came across was this American one. It is either a Rich Toys or a Keystone (Florine would know) and it was in perfect condition. I didn't buy it. I couldn't figure out how to get it in my suitcase.




There were lots of antiques dolls in various conditions, from very bad to very good. I didn't buy one, but I enjoyed seeing them.

These ones are vinyl. Cute little chairs in the background though

I didn't see much dollhouse furniture, but I did find some larger pieces here and there.

There were lots of these souvenir dolls for sale. I didn't need any so I didn't ask the price.


I did ask the price on this one. She wanted €2500. It didn't come home with me.

The same dealer wanted €1000 for this one. She stayed in Paris too.



I browsed a bit at this table, but didn't buy. His prices were almost as bad as the previous lady's


This cute little mid-century school was only €80. It's still in Paris.

Poor dolly has lost her head. But she still has her banjo!!


I saw several of these Provence-type dolls. As I have picked up a few in thrift shops at home I didn't feel the need to buy any.



There were games and other toys too.


This dolly needs a good home. But not with me.
Around noon I hopped on the Metro and made my way to the huge flea market in the north end of Paris - the Marche aux Puces, Saint Ouen
On the Metro I saw a lady with these crazy fingernails. She graciously allowed me to take a picture of them. What else could she do? We were between stops and she couldn't escape.


There were lovely things at the big flea market, but again I found very little that I wanted to take home with me.


The last time I was in Paris in I bought some wonderful antique dollhouse furniture from this dealer. This time I only took pictures.



So, what did I find worthy of taking home with me? Here is the total of my purchases from both flea markets. I added the ruler to the picture so you could see how tiny it all is. There was no problem fitting them all into my suitcase, and each piece is perfect for an antique dollhouse. What a score!!

The little Limoge basket and tray have the same pattern on them. I got them from two different dealers so that was a fun coincidence. The tiny dolls in regional costume are just the right size for the little donkey. I am not sure where they will go in my collection, but I couldn't resist them. The miniature painting is real and old. I hope I have a suitable frame. The tiny porcelain statues are  are traditional vintage French feves (beans). They would bake them into the new years cake as favours. They are so perfect for a dollhouse mantle.

Mindolton Manor and Lynnfield furniture

I found this wonderful big dollhouse on Craigslist, back June of 2009. It was fully built when I got it. It is made from a kit called the Bay Mansion #520 by Walmer which was available in the early 1980s.

The house is skillfully built. The exterior is beautifully finished. I love the colours the original owner used.

I have furnished the house exclusively with Lynnfield furniture (except for the grandfather clock in the library).

Chester Waite of Lynnfield, Mass. started making doll house furniture in the 1930's and marketed it as "Lynnfield". The furniture was elegantly and finely made and reflected several different periods of furniture design. The company changed hands several times over the years and the production moved to Columbia SA in the 1960's when Sonia Messer took over. Production ceased in the early 1980's. The furniture was marketed by Block House throughout its history and it is sometimes referred to as "Block House". The period styles remained the same over the years as did the nice quality and it continued to be made of genuine solid mahogany and mahogany veneers and assembled with tiny nails

The left wing (when facing the house) contains the Dining Room, Library, and Master Bedroom. There is a kitchen behind the dining room, but it is almost inaccessible and I have no pictures of it.

The butler is ready to serve dinner. Where is the family?

The middle section contains the stair halls. This is the entrance hall on the main floor.

The hall on the upper floor has a nice TV area for the family

The third floor hall has stairs leading to the attic which is not finished, so I have no pictures of it.


The right wing opens from the side and has 4 rooms

The living room is very elegant.

I love the Lynnfield furniture designs.

The lady of the house is a lovely Joan Benzell doll

I took a part a petit point evening bag to make the matching carpets

The bay windows in the door are great for extra furniture.

I love the veranda outside the living room

One of my favourite Lynnfield pieces is this large breakfront.

The right wing has a lovely big bedroom. The chaise lounge is a very rare Lynnfield piece.



A friend made this wonderful needlepoint rug. It is perfect in this bedroom

The vanity is also a rare piece

The nursery is above the blue bedroom

The large dollhouse is a Hallmark Christmas ornament

The small room that adjoins the nursery was shown on the dollhouse plans as the bathroom, but the builder of this house moved the door from the hallway to the nursery and made it the nanny's room. At the moment this large house has no bathroom.

I hope you enjoyed to tour. This is a very special dollhouse and I am happy to have it and the lovely Lynnfiield fruniture in my collection.

Small Stories - V&A Dollhouses at the National Building Museum in Washington DC

A few weeks ago I visited the National Building Museum in Washington DC for a special show titled Small Stories: At Home in a Dollhouse.

This is a collection of 12 doll's Houses from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood.

It was wonderful to see these exquisite houses in person. I had often gazed longingly at their pictures in books, so seeing them in person was like walking in to a room and seeing Paul McCartney or Benedict Cumberbatch standing there.

1895 Antique Doll House

I spent the weekend at my sister's and we had a happy hour or two furnishing one of her antique dollhouses with furniture from her collection.

This house was a Christmas present for a little girl in 1895 and was displayed each succeeding year near the family's Christmas tree for the next several generations. Eventually the newer members of the family discontinued this tradition and my sister was lucky enough to add it to her collection.

The house was originally built with four rooms. The kitchen was added a few years later

Prince Albert, a recently purchased Christmas decoration from the Victoria and Albert museum, is visiting.

The family is waiting in the parlour for the Prince to come down to tea. They are excited to have such a prestigious isitor.

The mother dog and her puppies are playing in the dining room. The furniture was made by Tynietoy in the 1920s. They will be shooed out if the maid catches them.

The children are playing in the nursery totally unconcerned about the royal visitor in the room next door

In the kitchen addition the cook and the maid are listening for the tea bell. The kettle is boiling so the water will be nice and hot for the Prince's tea.

My sister got this lovely tin stove at the Paris flea market last fall.

Someone has left his tools on the dresser.

The family is waiting for Prince Albert to come down for tea

Prince Albert is wondering why tea hasn't been announced. He is getting peckish.

In two of the  rooms there is fun and play

Happy Easter! Fashion Show at the Vintage Barbie Fashion Shop

Brunette Ponytail Barbie (BPB) is putting on an Easter Fashion Show at the Fashion Shop.
The theme of the show is turquoise. All the guests are in that colour and are barefoot.
They are barefoot because I was running out of daylight and didn't want to take the
time to look for the correct shoes.

BPB is hoping to sell a lot of these beautiful evening gowns. They look so springlike.

Brunette American Girl Barbie likes the gown in the middle.

It seems to be going well. The blond skipper twins are enjoying their first real fashion show.
At the models' entrance to the shop, Barbie and the Midges wait for the Sheath Fashion Show that is coming up next. They have their Easter chicks ready to set up for the show.

I copied the original Barbie Sheath Sensation and made this version from a Liberty of London fabric

I made this sheath from the same fabric. It is a copy of the Apple Print Sheath in the background

Holiday souvenirs in a Kitchen roombox

This afternoon I built myself a room box out of foam-core board. I papered it in traditional blue and white floor and wall paper. Then I furnished it with things I have collected on my travels over the years.

There are 3 Italian bowls in the cupboard. I collected them along the Amafli coast last spring.

I found these wonderful antique canisters in Germany last month. 

These, excluding the windmill pitcher, are magnet souvenirs I found in Rome last year. I picked up the pitcher and many of the other blue and white pieces at different flea markets in Canada and the USA,

I got the hat, hanging pan and hanging cup in Germany last month. I found this cute chair and its mate in Sweden two years ago.

The scale and rolling pin holder are also from my trip to Germany last month. The little chest of drawers was found at a garage sale in Maryland.

I found the wooden utensil holder in an antique store in Berlin last month. The nice lady who owned it gave me a dog and a cat for my other dollhouse. They aren't here because they are the wrong scale for this room, but I remember her fondly. The hanging cheese is another magnet found in Rome last year 

The little delft shoes are from trip to the Netherlands in 2005, but the carpet beater and the three molds are also from Germany last month.

I found the little stove at a flea market in Pennsylvania. The teapot is special Polish pottery. I bought it in Krakow last month

The table, chairs, server and cupboard were given to me by my dear friend CM when I visited her in California a few years ago. The four plates on the middle shelf of the cupboard are reproductions of the traditional blue onion pattern that is so common in antique German dollhouses. I bought them in Seiffen, Germany last month.

On the table is a tray with an Erzgebirge tea set and eggs in egg cups. I got those in Seiffen, Germany, the town where these wonderful toys are made.

I bought the chickens at the Marolin Company in Germany last month. They are made of paper mache and are exactly like the ones I have in my little Putz farm except the ones in my farm are about 100 years old,

Every time I look at this room box I will also see all the wonderful places I have visited and all the great friends I have made over the years. What a great room!!

A visit to the Coburg Doll Museum in Germany

I spent most of this past May touring Central Europe with a bus load of doll collectors. We visited many doll and toy museums. The Puppenmuseum Coburg was one of the best.

Coburg is located in the heart of the doll factory area of Germany. It had a wonderful variety of dolls and miniatures for us to see
I love this room box. It is full of treasures including lots of boule furniture.



Coburg is a lovely town with a wonderful town square.


Queen Victoria's husband Albert was born here. This is the palace square.

I finally got what I wanted for Christmas 60 years ago

When I was a kid I poured over the Christmas Catalogue doll section and dreamed of what Santa would bring me. I am sure that most of you did the same. Here are a few pages from the early 60s that made me promise to be good forever.





So imagine what it was like to finally have a childhood dream fulfilled. Last week a big package was delivered. Join me while I open it.

Antique German Gottschalk Kitchen

Kitchens have been on my mind lately. I have been isolating at home for more than a year and during that time I have rediscovered cooking and baking. I am still working full time remotely, but with more home time I have been pulling out old recipes and discovering new ones.

 I have always been attracted to the wonderful doll kitchens that were given to little girls in past centuries so they could learn about "women's work".  In today's world "women's work" means much more than kitchens, but I feel the charm of these antique miniatures holds to this day.
This lovely example from around 1900 is done in blue and white. The metal stove has painted blue trim, and there is a variety of blue enamelware to go with it..
 

I particularly love the blue delft design wallpaper with border.

The kitchen furniture, consisting of a two piece cupboard, wall shelf, and table with four chairs, is wood painted white and trimmed in blue

Accessories include 18 pieces of blue hard to find enamelware, a wonderful cast iron hand grinder trimmed in blue, and other misc kitchen pieces, including a rather large napkin in its holder.





The rolling pin in it's fancy holder is painted with fruit and the utensils hanging below it are also decorated. I love this piece.

There are a few pieces, like the ceramic "Home Sweet Home" bucket that don't seem to be original to the kitchen, but as they came with it I will leave them be.

Tootsietoy Dollhouse from 1927

Here is my 1927 Tootsietoy Cardboard Doll House. The house measures approximately 19" long x 14.5" wide x 15 1/2 tall. The Dowst Brothers Company of Chicago started to produce dollhouse furniture sets around 1920 and continued until 1937. They called the toys "Tootsie" after a family member who died tragically young at age of 16  Tootsie soon became Tootsietoy.

The sides of the house have the same artwork with a trellis, flower boxes and green shutters. Wayne Paper Goods  Co. of Ft. Wayne, Indiana actually produced the house for Tootsietoy,

The front of the house has two large doors that open so the interior of the house can be accessed easily. Mine is missing the cardboard piece for the attic windows. It fits into the roof as shown in the next picture. Mine is also missing the knobs for the doors.


The inside of the house has lithographed details, like a fireplace, curtains, accessories, light sconces, carpets and anything else to make it a comfortable home. 

The living room has a lovely brick fireplace with a roaring fire.

The house technically has 6 rooms. 
The bathroom is in an alcove behind one bedroom. The metal Tootsietoy furniture is a perfect fit. 



There is even a scale so the dolls can watch their weight.

The smaller room in front of the bathroom can be a bedroom, or a dressing room or whatever. The console radio opens up to reveal the dials and speaker.

The kitchen is an alcove behind the dining room.





I am missing the dining room table but I have substituted the living room side table for now.



The living room furniture is gold. The phonograph lets the dolls listen to music after dinner.
